Industrial symbiosis toolkit
Consolidation
Step 5 is focused on upholding trust among the stakeholders of the industrial symbiosis system. If the number of stakeholders increases, procedures should be established to guarantee transparency and systematic progress.
5.1 Maintain trust
For the long-term success of an industrial symbiosis project, it is crucial to maintain trust among the members of the IS network. In the event of network expansion, new members must be seamlessly integrated into the system.
Similar to STEP 1 Pre-planification, funding is needed primarily for communication and networking purposes.
- Increased visibility and share successful IS examples.
- Dissemination of knowledge and organise training, build networks and learning forums.

5.2 Ongoing communication
Success stories should be shared internally so that the staff sees the advantages of the industrial symbiosis projects and to encourage their involvement. Additionally, best practices should be disseminated externally. In this way, new markets, potential customers, investors, and potential partners for new collaborations can be reached.
Some funding might be needed for public relations and networking activities.
- Intermediaries and clusters can share best practices regarding innovative technologies/ processes, or specific business models.
- Public authorities can promote knowledge exchange and support communities of practice in their territory.
- They can support by disseminating knowledge, organising training, building networks, and providing learning forums.
