LC-EEB-02-2018: Building information modelling adapted to efficient renovation (RIA)

Abstract

The Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools developed so far besides being adapted mainly to new buildings have evolved in a direction opposite to other European initiatives as the industry 4.0. This means that whereas BIM favors standard elements, i4.0 favors customized elements. In addition, already existing buildings present, in the majority of the cases, no standardized solutions and lack of information. Therefore, a tough challenge will be to be able to use the BIM concept and platforms (with its recognized benefits) in renovation projects, respecting the identity of the existing building. BIM can be defined as a centralized electronic repository of information pertaining to the physical and functional aspects of a project that evolves over its life cycle. One can see BIM as a collection of “smart” objects stored in an “intelligent” database. BIM technology is object-oriented. The present idea aims at creating “smart” objects from existing buildings able to be exchanged with BIM platforms. These tools should incorporate inputs from different sources (e.g., geometric data, materials characterization data); energy data, etc., and will be able to exchange data with BIM tools predefined objects, manufacturer libraries of objects, etc. The online exchange of data with manufacturers will allow to extend online databases for customization not only of renovation projects but also of new projects.

Creation of a tool kit that can allow an interconnection between two European challenges that may, in the first analysis, be contradictory: BIM and Industry 4.0, and that can bring costs, time and footprint efficiency.

Objectives:

  1. To give BIM the same characteristics and advantages in the response to the remodeling of buildings, similar to the construction of new buildings.
  2. Reduce the creativity limitation of architects;
  3. Boost industry activity that is geared towards customization, and where BIM can be a threat;

The development of the tool kit will accomplish the Standards defined for the BIM tools, and will be based in digitalization, in order to link BIM in the renovation buildings with the Industry.

It is intended after the development of the Tool Kit, conduct Case Studies, which allow testing and demonstration in providers and designers, in order to construct best practices in the renovation buildings connecting the BIM users with the different suppliers.

The leader of the Project will be CEI Group, a Portuguese SME.
