Zero waste at Denby Ceramics in the UK

Zero waste at Denby Ceramics in the UK

Information

Synergy seals the zero-waste deal

  • Partnership deal diverts 3 936 tonnes of waste from landfill
  • Cost savings totalled around € 11 400 and additional sales of some € 125 000

Denby Ceramics has been making pottery in Derbyshire, England for over 200 years and has moved on from the production of the salt-glazed pottery of its early days to the easily recognisable kitchen and tableware of today.

Determine the building's energy consumption

Determine the building's energy consumption

Information

Building energy consumption readings can be obtained from different sources. Building energy certificates, for example, show the overall primary energy requirements, further broken down into consumption and demand-based certificates.

Conducting an energy audit

Conducting an energy audit

Information

Companies, especially SMEs, need to operate as efficiently as possible to remain competititve. Energy auditing is a useful way to identify and prioritise energy-saving opportunities.

First, assess current energy use in a company by taking energy meter readings and analysing consumption (record them in a tracking spreadhseet or similar template). Benchmark the data against similar organisations.

Energy efficient cars

Energy efficient cars

Information

A comparison of a conventional car with an energy efficient one delivered positive results. The environmentally friendly car was the same model as the conventional car (gasoline-powered, efficiency class B), but powered by natural gas with efficiency class A+. The price of the conventional model was € 10 375 and the energy efficient model came to € 12 950.

Draught-proofing a building

Draught-proofing a building

Information

Sealing up unwanted draughts is an inexpensive way of saving small to moderate amounts of energy by improving thermal insulation. Draught-free rooms and buildings are more comfortable at lower temperatures, so you can even turn down the thermostat, which also saves on energy bills.

Cladding and roof insulation

Cladding and roof insulation

Information

Heating costs through the roof? Consider cladding and insulation

Cladding is used to provide an additional layer of insulation to a building which improves thermal performance and weather resistance. It can be made using a variety of technologies, materials and procedures. Metal, wood, brick, vinyl, or composites can be used with varying insulating and cost-performance.

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity wall insulation

Information

Have you looked into those cavities? Cavity wall insulation

Insulating wall cavities can help you cut energy use and save money by reducing heat lost through walls in colder months, and keeping it out during warmer months, which cuts back on cooling needs.

Cavity wall insulation can be used in any double-walled or double-skinned building. The cavity between the walls needs to be at least 50 mm for the insulation to be effective.

Tip

There are different types of cavity wall insulation:

Refrigeration heat recovery

Refrigeration heat recovery

Information

Recovering heat produced during the refrigeration process is possible and can help save energy and cut costs. Heat-recovery equipment can be fitted to existing plant or integrated in new buildings, and heat from the heat rejection stage of the refrigeration process can be recovered from the condenser. The recovered heat can then be used for general space heating or hot water.

There are two types of heat recovery, depending on the installation and refrigerant used:

Retrofitting refrigeration display systems

Retrofitting refrigeration display systems

Information

Refrigerated display cabinets are important for marketing/selling goods that need to be kept cold while displayed, but they are notoriously energy-intensive. Taking necessary maintenance measures can help save energy and reduce yearly bills. For instance, when cabinets are not regularly cleaned or maintained, efficiency and performance suffer. Equally, retrofitting the curtains or blinds of refrigerated cabinets can reduce electricity demand.
