Description
In collaboration of various EEN Sectoral Groups (such as for instance Aerospace, Electronics, Digital, Health, and Mobility-Transport-Automotive), EEN is preparing a webinar for its members to better understand opportunities available under the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) - how it works and how to access funding and support opportunities for semiconductor research and innovation in Europe, including calls for proposals for competence centres and pilot lines.
This online informative meeting will take place online on September 11th, from 10.00 to11.30. The meeting is opened also to the Clusters organisations and their stakeholders.
During the webinar, we will delve into more detail:
- Initiative and non-initiative calls, main targets to reach:
- what will the initiative project be supposed to create (e.g. new platforms? new chips technological methodologies, new technologies?)
- is the initiative project going to offer services? Would those be services for SMEs working on electronics/chips?
- How to get involved in consortia?
- How to create a direct contact with the responsible person from the national funding authority of each country?
- MS contribution and eligibility for costs’ reimbursement
- How to get better prepared for upcoming calls and activities
- Potential collaboration and co-organisation of common Brokerage Events
Background:
One of the largest EU programmes, both in terms of impact and size (over €40 billion) is the EU CHIPS ACT. And since chips are a key part of products and devices across all sectors, this programme directly and indirectly affects all EEN members.
The initial reason for the creation of this programme was the disruption of global supply chains following the outbreak of the Coronavirus, now 4 years ago. And an additional reason emerged 2 years ago with the conflict in Ukraine, which led to the increase in raw material prices with an even more disruptive effect on said supply chains. Not to mention the geopolitical developments that this entailed and which made us in the West realise that some countries we have worked closely with in the past may no longer be considered friendly nations.
The EU (as well as other countries such as the US and South Korea) developed the Chips Act to reduce our dependence on the Far East, especially China, when it comes to the production and supply of chips. This is mainly done by bringing back and developing new production capacity, especially for high-end chips and components, in the EU.
Although the EU Chips Act is currently mainly focused on the major players in the European chip industry, large OEMs and research institutes, we would like to inform you that there is also a program line specifically aimed at the SME sector: the Chips Joint Undertaking. Since the European Chips Survey was launched in spring 2022, several SGs have been closely connected to this initiative and have tried to understand its dynamics. Not least because their customers are naturally also interested in knowing whether and how they can benefit from this program. Since 2024 is the year in which the EU CHIPS ACT will open a series of calls for SMEs, we believe that it is also of interest for other SGs to be informed about these opportunities. Therefore, we have proposed the organizational webinar for SGs and their customers to be updated on the Chips Joint Undertaking.
